Pride At Work: Celebrating and Embracing LGBTQIA+ Diversity in the Workplace

Updated: Mar 13

What do the terms SOGIESC and LGBTQIA+ mean and why are they important?

Awareness and commitment to respecting an individual’s SOGIESC (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Expression, and Sex Characteristics) and the LGTBQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, and Asexual) community is crucial in today’s workplace. It would benefit not only employees on the individual level, but the organization as well. Supporting SOGIESC and LGBTQIA+ awareness leads to a more diverse and inclusive environment at work. Employees who feel safe and accepted in the workplace tend to be more motivated and engaged, contributing to the overall success of the organization. Creating a supportive atmosphere is key to ensuring employee well-being.

Last August 14, PVP conducted a live webinar on the importance of SOGIESC and LGBTQIA+ with the employees of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA). The session was led by Mr. Niel Steve Kintanar, a registered clinical psychologist who has been an active pillar in the LGTBQIA+ advocacy scene in Cebu City. Through the webinar, participants were able to gain extensive knowledge on what the concepts of SOGIESC and LGBTQIA+ mean, and how they can be allies to the community. They were also given tips and guidelines on how to show support on a personal, institutional, and national level. The session ended with a brief question and answer portion where participants were able to voice their thoughts and own insights. Some were even able to share their own personal experiences and stories.

With the passionate and generous sharing of Mr. Niel Steve Kintanar about SOGIESC and LGTBQIA+, the webinar served as a jumpstart for the employees of BCDA in building a more inclusive and supportive work environment. Hope to see you again next time!
